Analog circuits operate on voltages, currents, and electrical signals, from DC to microwave RF frequencies. Analog functions complement digi... Moretal, which operate solely on binary bits of information, and provide the critical real-world interfaces to sensors, supplies, and communication channels. Analog IC designers may develop standalone products such as amplifiers and voltage regulators, or develop functions that are embedded in today’s complex Systems on a Chip (SoCs), which rely more and more on mixed-signal analog-digital operation.

  • DSP

    Follow

Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is the method of processing signals and data in order to enhance or modify those signals or to analyze those... More signals to determine specific information content. A typical DSP system consists of a processor and other hardware used to convert outside analog signals to digital form and possibly back to analog (continuous) form. The DSP TechChannel delivers news, discussion, analysis, and resources related to digital signal processing.

  • EDA

    Follow

Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools span the entire design chain for electronics products. Automation starts with technology computer-a... Moreided automation (TCAD) tools, which engineers use to model the fabrication processes that determine device physical behavior. Modeling engineers convert that behavior to simulation models, which designers then use to analyze their circuits, from individual transistors and analog circuits to logic gates, to complex digital blocks and complete integrated circuits (ICs) and systems. Physical implementation tools are used to layout chips, packages and printed-circuit boards (PCBs) for manufacturing. Verification tools are critical for engineers to test their designs for correct functional operation, including the effects of environmental factors such as variations in temperature, voltage and manufacturing tolerances.

Linux is an operating system based on the Linux kernel created by Linus Torvalds in 1991. The Linux kernel is one of the largest and most ac... Moretive free software projects in existence, with thousands of commercial and private developers contributing code to the kernel and developer communities supporting distributions such as Debian, openSUSE, and Fedora. As free and open source software, its underlying source code can be used, modified, and redistributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Linux can be installed on a variety of hardware platforms, powering everything from the New York Stock Exchange to smartphones to supercomputers.

  • Embedded Software

    Follow

Beyond simple input/output data transformation, embedded software is built into the electronics of devices we use every day - cars, phones, ... MoreTVs, appliances, health monitoring equipment, etc. - to control these systems' interactions with the physical world. Embedded software thus becomes more complex as applications become more sophisticated in systems such as planes, missiles, and process control systems. Developers must consider timeliness, concurrency, liveness, reactivity, and heterogeneity when programming abstractions. Types of embedded software include operating systems such as embedded Linux, Windows Embedded, and Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOSs), which are intended for real-time applications and designed to be very compact and efficient, forsaking many functions that non-embedded computer operating systems provide. Communication protocols designated for embedded systems can be closed or open source.

  • Rugged Power

    Follow

Military applications and systems including rugged handheld computers or TabletPCs, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Unmanned Aerial Systems... More (UASs), mission computers, avionics, radar, telemetry, sonar, and manpacks - to name just a few - are based on disparate technologies. And, they all have differing roles within the mission and on the battlefield. The only design commonality among all of them is that they all need power - and specifically "rugged power" - to bring them to life. These harsh-environment, mil-deployable power technologies are all designed (or uprated via HALT/HASS testing) to meet the rigors of the modern battlefield. They must meet MIL-SPEC and other mission-specific requirements for extreme shock, vibration, and temperature levels. These "ruggedized" power technologies include power supplies, DC-DC converters, batteries, fuel cells, power adapters, and more, all ready for the demands of today's front lines.

As a VME progeny standard, VITA/VSO's VPX (VITA 46) form factor provides much higher bandwidth than VME could ever deliver, among other... More plusses. But there was one issue with VPX: system-level incompatibilities among multiple vendors. Thus VPX's sister standard, OpenVPX (VITA 65) was developed, defining modules, slots, and backplane profiles to ensure system-level interoperability. Meanwhile, the VPX/OpenVPX ecosystem continues to grow with additional burgeoning VITA standards such as VITA 62 (Power Supply Modules for VPX/OpenVPX) and VITA 66 (Optical Interconnect on VPX), with more standards sure to arise.

  • Safety and Security

    Follow

A couple things that are imperative in society and in just plain life – safety and security – are just as important in the embedded comp... Moreuting realm. From avionics to automobiles to spacecraft to the manufacturing plant, we all like to know we're safe from physical harm caused by mechanical equipment failures. In the avionics realm, electronics safety criticality is ensured by the FAA's safety certification standards called DO-178B and DO-254, for example. In the outside plant or central office, NEBS compliance is likewise vital. However, in the security-critical world, military Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) and net-centric systems used by DoD Command and Control (C2) must be hack-proof to protect our soldiers' lives – and our national security. Multiple Independent Levels of Security (MILS) and virtualization-scheme partitioning can be used to help prevent security infractions and work by invoking a separate partition for each application, thus separating applications with varying classification levels and providing users access only to the applications for which they are authorized. And lastly, though perhaps not necessary for all secure applications, Common Criteria certification additionally means the application has gone through rigorous security testing.

  • Multicore

    Follow

Ever-smaller silicon geometries are reaching their physical limits. This threatens to slow the pace of Moore’s Law to a stand-still. As a ... Moreresult, multicore technology is becoming widely available to address the performance bottleneck. The key to successful multicore product development is system and application level software that takes full advantage of the parallel processing environment without being too difficult or time consuming to write and validate. Multicore silicon allows the flexibility to partition cores for specific functions thereby requiring fewer silicon components or replicating the same processing function across multiple cores to substantially increase processing power. LAN/WAN/MAN networking, mobile 4G/LTE, medical, automotive, and industrial control markets already use multicore processing, and the list is growing. The multicore channel keeps your finger on the pulse of silicon, platform, and software developments as they happen in order to make effective and efficient use of this quickly advancing technology.

  • Virtualization

    Follow

Always-on goals put virtualization in the spotlight. If programs could execute in an environment separated from the underlying hardware reso... Moreurces, when hardware failed, the processes could move to another system. With virtualization, a number of Operating Systems (OSs) can run on one hardware platform, helping to lower data center expenses. Switching to a customer's operating system to troubleshoot problems is also enabled by virtualization, which makes multi-tasking possible. Multiple virtualized systems can be run by a single-core processor, or a set number of cores within a multicore processor can be dedicated to each virtualized system. Virtualization's appeal to the safety- and security-minded is apparent: It's possible to isolate a virtualized system in order to protect it.

Telehealth, which is defined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), is the... More use of electronic information and telecommunications technologies to support long-distance clinical health care, patient and professional health-related education, public health, and health administration. Technologies used in telehealth typically are videoconferencing, the Internet, store-and-forward imaging, streaming media, and terrestrial and wireless communications. While new applications are increasingly found for using these technologies, significant barriers remain to making these technologies an integral part of daily health care practice.
