The Cloud TechChannel precipitates what's on the horizon for on-demand Web-based embedded computing resources and how they're transforming the traditional notions of data access and storage through the concept of virtualized network infrastructure. The connectivity enabled by this shared infrastructure has the possibility of bringing to fruition long-held ideas such as the “Internet of things” and enhancements to the smart grid, but raises issues surrounding data integrity and security, network transparency, and virtual machines. The Cloud TechChannel keeps an eye on the weather, tracking developments in “Green Computing,” Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), device/location independence, Web operating systems, and other key tenets of Cloud engineering.

Actix Mobile network analytics and optimization software deployed on over half of worldwide LTE networks

London, UK. May 16 2012: Actix, the world leader in mobile network analytics and optimization, announced it has secured its 60th customer for its LTE Network Acceptance solution. As the pace of LTE rollouts increases, Actix is already supporting most of Europe, Asia and North America’s early deployments.

Actix’s LTE Network Acceptance solution helps mobile operators minimize the substantial risks involved in LTE rollout and ensure day one network quality. The solution enables them to independently verify the performance of their LTE networks prior to launch by enforcing transparent and unambiguous KPIs; automating the network acceptance process to manage cost and complexity and deliver centralized governance, ensuring full control of network equipment providers. Full optimization capabilities also allow any issues identified during the process to be addressed at the same time.

“Actix is delighted that our leadership in mobile analytics and optimization is continuing with LTE” said Bill McHale, Actix CEO. “For such a critical investment, taking the risk out of LTE rollout by ensuring specific contractual KPIs are met by network equipment providers is vital. Actix’s network acceptance solution is handing control of the network back into the hands of the operator, and it’s testament to the capability and performance of the solution that so many worldwide operators and vendors are using it to deploy next generation networks.”

Network Acceptance is a critical process used by mobile network operators to ensure that deployed network equipment meets performance targets prior to launch. With ROI dependent on an on-time, on-quality and on-budget delivery of the network, network rollout can be a high-risk activity for operators. Poor quality network delivery can lead to operators experiencing lower service uptake, higher levels of customer dissatisfaction, increased post launch optimization costs, and a reputation for a poor network quality.

The Actix acceptance solution is available in a single-user desktop version, or as a multi-user hosted cloud, allowing hundreds of stakeholders within both the operator and network equipment provider access to the data.

“Our close working relationship with early stage LTE operators is providing us with valuable insight into the very real challenges involved in rolling out LTE, especially in the modern HetNet environment” said Richard Kateley, Actix CTO. “Actix supports over 200 data interfaces and this multi-vendor and multi-technology approach is helping operators make sense of an environment far more complex than the one they faced during the rollout of UMTS”.

Actix has been nominated for the ‘Best Test/Measurement LTE Product’ at the Telecoms.com LTE Awards 2012. Now in its third year, and taking place at LTE World Summit 2012 on May 23rd in the El Xalet, Montjuic, Barcelona, the awards celebrate and recognize the achievements of leadership, quality and innovation in the LTE industry.

About Actix

Actix is the world leader in mobile network analytics and optimization, with more than 400 customers, including 25 of the top 30 operators worldwide. Founded in 1991, today Actix has offices in the U.K., Germany, U.S.A, Malaysia, China, Singapore, Japan, Australia, Brazil and Dubai.

In 1997, Actix developed the world’s first multi-vendor desktop solution, Analyzer, for mobile network layer 3 analytics, which is the current de facto global standard. In 2007, Actix delivered another world first, a mobile network analytics and optimization platform supporting hundreds of users, called ActixOne. This optimization platform encompasses multiple solutions to assure network rollout quality, improve customer experience in the RAN and optimize multi-vendor 2G, 3G and 4G networks.

100% Accurate Performance Results Within Hours of Installation, Months Before Tapeout

Carbon Design Systems® Inc., the leading supplier of virtual platform and secure model solutions, today introduced the Carbon Performance Analysis Kit (CPAK) family for accelerating the analysis, optimization and verification of system-on-chip (SoC) performance.

CPAKs enable architects and engineers to begin analyzing performance and power within hours of installation, and months before tapeout, reducing overall time-to-market pressures and minimizing the risk of a complete re-design. They can be customized using models from Carbon’s IP Exchange model portal, SystemC or Carbon Model Studio.

The CPAK family for ARM® Cortex™ A-Series processors contains reference hardware and software designs along with analysis and debug software for the Cortex-A9, Cortex-A15 and Cortex-A7 cores, and the ARM big.LITTLE™ subsystem.

It comes pre-configured with bare-metal initialization software, Linux or Android OS for analyzing, optimizing and verifying performance and power. In addition, the CPAK Family is pre-configured with the multicore task migration software layer between the big.LITTLE processing cluster, which includes ARM Cortex-A15 MPCore and Cortex-A7 MPCore processors, and the client OS.

“Designers often attempt to use 85-90% cycle-accurate solutions that they claim are good enough for system analysis,” comments Joe Tatham, Carbon’s vice president of engineering. “What typically happens, though, is that model is only 50-60% accurate for certain areas. Designers are making multi-million dollar decisions based upon data that’s about as accurate as the flip of a coin. Carbon is the only vendor that offers 100% cycle-accurate models, where design teams can guarantee performance results will match the final silicon, minimizing the risk of a re-design.”

Demonstrations During DAC

Carbon will demonstrate the CPAK for ARM big.LITTLE at this year’s Design Automation Conference (DAC) in San Francisco’s Moscone Center June 4-6. Carbon will exhibit and offer presentations in the ARM Connected Community Pavilion, Booth #802.

Availability

The CPAK Family for ARM Cortex Processors will be available in bare metal and Linux configurations in the second quarter of calendar year 2012, and in Android configurations in the second half of calendar 2012.

Details about Carbon’s Performance Analysis Kit Family, including compatibility with ARM tools and popular software debuggers, can be found at: www.carbondesignsystems.com/cpak.

About Carbon Design Systems

Reports 1,300X Acceleration on Wireless Application Design Using High-Level Synthesis

EVE, the leader in hardware/software co-verification, today announced that its ZeBu hardware-assisted verification platform and ZEMI-3 transaction-level modeling methodology have been adopted by Fujitsu Microelectronics Solutions Limited of Kanagawa, Japan.

Fujitsu Microelectronics Solutions implemented an integrated algorithmic C verification to register transfer level (RTL) emulation flow for its high-level synthesis (HLS) design methodology.

“An HLS design methodology accelerates functional verification by raising the abstraction level, decreasing the time and cost of RTL design,” remarks Takashi Nishikawa, of the Design Technology Department, Technology Development Division at Fujitsu Microelectronics Solutions Limited. “Accordingly, we are continually improving our HLS design methodology with great success. We built an RTL verification environment using the SystemVerilog DPI-C (Direct Programming Interface-C), and implemented the integrated flow from algorithmic C verification to RTL emulation with ZEMI-3 and ZeBu, deployed since 2006. When we deployed the flow with ZEMI-3 and ZeBu in designing a wireless application, it provided 1,300X acceleration against simulation.”

“We are delighted to see a successful deployment of ZEMI-3 and ZeBu in a real design environment,” says Luc Burgun, EVE’s chief executive officer and president. “The results reported by Fujitsu Microelectronics Solutions are proof of the value of our emulation platform in developing modern designs.”

More details will be available during an educational seminar hosted by EVE Friday, June 15, in Yokohama, Japan.

Licensing Agreement Gives Forte Access to HighIP USB 2.0 Device, Embedded Host Controller

Forte Design Systems™, a leading provider of software products that enable design at a higher level of abstraction and improve design results, today announced High-IP Design Company, a SystemC intellectual property (IP) provider, has licensed Forte’s Cynthesizer™ SystemC high-level synthesis (HLS).

As part of the licensing agreement, Forte will resell a high-level, re-targetable USB 2.0 device and embedded host controller for systems on chip (SoCs) and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) in synthesizable SystemC form and Verilog register transfer level (RTL) code. A USB 3.0 device and embedded host controller will be available later in the year.

“HighIP has concluded that we can produce state-of-the-art IP using Forte’s Cynthesizer and SystemC,” says Phil Tharp, principal engineer at HighIP. “The use of this methodology has allowed us to produce high-quality IP with fewer resources and has the added advantage that we can offer high-level TLM models that are guaranteed accurate.”

“Design groups have been building SystemC IP to promote design reuse and faster time-to-market for more than a decade,” add Brett Cline, Forte’s vice president of sales and marketing. “HighIP’s adoption of Cynthesizer HLS allows them to bring the next generation of reusable IP to the general market in less time and at a lower cost.”

Forte will offer continuous demonstrations of Cynthesizer in Booth #1430 during the 49th Design Automation Conference (DAC) June 4-6 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

The demonstration will highlight Cynthesizer’s complex hierarchy support, custom transaction-level modeling (TLM) interfaces and other advanced features on an ARM-based image processing system with control- and datapath-type blocks. In addition, Phil Tharp will host a discussion on using Cynthesizer for the design of the HighIP USB models with a demonstration of the live hardware at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, in Booth #1430.

Telematics to benefit from increased after-market provision and wider service offerings

Hampshire, UK – 14th May 2012: Intelligent vehicles, through embedded connectivity, will be directly responsible for creating revenues of $14.4 billion by 2016, as existing telematics players extend to new geographical markets and expand their service models in the next five years, finds a new report from Juniper Research.

After-market focus

New Telematics units that can be installed once the vehicle is on the road from players like OnStar will give the market a second wind, finds the report. Meanwhile the range of subscription services on offer is becoming more comprehensive says Juniper Research.

“Intelligent vehicles can now come equipped with features including safety, security, navigation and emergency service access under the same subscription,” says Anthony Cox, the report’s author, noting that targeted services for insurance and stolen vehicle recovery are also gaining momentum through regional players. For most telematics areas, however, the US is ahead of other geographical regions finds, the report.

Further findings from the Telematics and Smart Vehicles report include:

By 2016 there will be 92 million internet-connected vehicles on the road, featuring technology to integrate the smartphone into the head-unit.

Commercial telematics is seeing sustained take-up, driven by its promise of increasing driver efficiency and managing costs

In the commercial telematics market, Juniper Research observes an increasing level of sophistication as fleet managers use telematics to increase fleet efficiency, comply with regulation and monitor driver behaviour. Players are also leveraging the power of the cloud and internet portals to enhance the service they offer.

The ‘Telematics ~ The Route Ahead’ whitepaper can be downloaded from the Juniper website along with further details of the study Telematics & Smart Vehicles: Infotainment & Commercial Uses, Insurance & Vehicle Recovery 2012-2016.

Ixia said the acquisition extends its scope in the realm of real time network monitoring and traffic visibility.

Ixia agreed to acquire Anue Systems, which offers a network monitoring solutions, for $145 million in cash.

Anue Systems offers a Net Tool Optimizer that provides traffic visibility for Service Providers and enterprises by enabling test tools to access taps across the network. Anue aggregates and filters network traffic to optimize network monitoring tool usage. Anue also can replicate network traffic from a single tap or SPAN port and send it to multiple monitoring tools simultaneously. The company was founded in 2002 and is based in Austin, Texas.

Ixia said the acquisition extends its scope in the realm of real time network monitoring and traffic visibility.

Anue grew revenues 51 percent in 2011 to $40.5 million and generated gross margins of 83 percent for the year. For the 12 months ended March 31, 2012, Anue generated $47.6 million in revenues.

Ixia expects this transaction to be accretive to non-GAAP earnings beginning in the third quarter of 2012. Non-GAAP earnings exclude stock-based compensation, amortization of acquired intangible assets, and other non-recurring charges, net of the applicable tax effects.

“Many networking trends such as the deployment of cloud and virtualization, LTE and mobility driven growth, security implications of applications delivered over cloud infrastructures, and the massive expansion in bandwidth are fueling both Ixia’s and Anue’s growth,” said Vic Alston, Ixia chief operating officer. “Next-generation cloud providers, mobility operators and enterprises all require network and traffic visibility to maintain quality of service across application and service delivery. Anue’s Optimizer solutions provide customers with a measurable value regarding performance, scale, and resiliency of networks, while enabling the creation of a next generation platform for quality of service delivery across live networks.”

Ixia’s recent acquisitions include VeriWave (wireless testing), Catapult Communications (3G and 4G network tests), and Agilent’s N2X Data Networks Product Line.
