D2 and GCT stage live demonstrations of mobile video calls using Rohde & Schwarz's LTE and IMS communication test equipment

New Orleans (CTIA Wireless 2012), San Jose and Santa Barbara, CA – May 8, 2012 — D2 Technologies, the market leader in embedded IP communications software platforms, is unveiling a new reference solution for mobile 4G Voice over LTE (VoLTE) in partnership with GCT Semiconductor, Inc., a leading designer and supplier of advanced 4G mobile semiconductor solutions. This collaboration brings a complete, cost-effective turnkey design to market that is ideal for enabling OEMs and ODMs to quickly deliver smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices offering the speed and richness of the LTE network – including VoLTE and Rich Communication Suite (RCS) video calling.

Visitors to International CTIA Wireless 2012, being held May 8-10 in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, can get a first look at the new reference solution in live video calls via the NVIDIA® Tegra® 3 quad-core mobile processor and reference tablet, running through the R&S®CMW500 LTE and IMS communication tester, in Rohde & Schwarz’s exhibition space (Booth 2651).

“D2 Technologies and GCT continue to successfully work together,” said Dr. Kyeongho “KH” Lee, President and Chief Executive Officer of GCT Semiconductor, Inc. “Wireless carriers are quickly moving toward LTE as their preferred 4G standard for the future, so by enhancing our partnership with companies such as D2 Technologies, our customers will be able to accelerate time-to-market for VoLTE devices utilizing the power of our field-proven and commercially deployed technologies.”

The new reference solution brings together D2’s mCUE® 4G, a converged 4G mobile communications client for VoLTE and RCS video calling, and GCT’s GDM7240, a full band FDD-LTE single chip that supports all LTE frequency band classes and bandwidths. mCUE 4G is highly integrated and optimized for the Android™ OS platform and delivers today’s most in-demand IMS communications features. When paired with the award-winning GDM7240 and its powerful high performance processor, OEMs/ODMs can create mobile products that exceed today’s consumer expectations, not just for VoLTE, but for higher speeds, global roaming and the delivery of enhanced, simultaneous applications.

This places the mobility anchor at the wireless mobile broadband network's edge, eliminating the need for data to traverse a centralized EPC/core via tunneling.

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., May 2, 2012 — Lemko Corporation announces the premier live demonstration of their revolutionary 4G LTE Distributed Mobile Wireless Network Solution at International CTIA Wireless May 8-10, 2012. This is one of the industry’s first working LTE DiMoWiNe solutions.

The 700 MHz system highlights Lemko’s DiMoWiNe solution that virtualizes the EPC and IMS core at each eNodeB. This places the mobility anchor at the wireless mobile broadband network’s edge, eliminating the need for data to traverse a centralized EPC/core via tunneling. Lemko’s DiMoWiNe creates the shortest possible communication path between subscribers and provides flat access to content. The DiMoWiNe “backhaul-less” system demonstrates major improvements in latency, while simplifying the network’s design, at a significant reduction in reoccurring operational expenses common in traditional centralized EPC/IMS core solutions.

Demonstrations are by appointment only. Contact Brian Ponte, Vice President of Business Development, at 1 (847) 969-7775 or bponte@lemko.com to set up a meeting. Lemko is located in the Exhibitor Meeting Room area at MR-1636.

Lemko Corporation provides GSM, CDMA, UMTS and LTE end-to-end network solutions. By combining the design principles of the Internet with the mobility requirements of cellular, Lemko creates a powerful all-IP software package that shifts the network intelligence to the edge — the cell site. Lemko is headquartered in Schaumburg, Illinois, USA.

"High definition," from video streaming to richer, more interactive/immersive social networking and gaming experiences, should coax 3G customers to migrate to 4G.

SINGAPORE — 4G subscriber adoption is primed to take off in 2012 as a range of 4G-enabled mobile devices, from USB dongles, smartphones, tablets, 4G portable hotspots, and wireless broadband CPE modems, are shipping from assembly line to retail stores. “4G devices are expected to generate 87 million in unit sales in 2012, up 294% year-on-year,” states Jake Saunders, vice president of forecasting. “The lion’s share of the market is now backing LTE as service provider and vendor support has fallen away from WiMAX.” Observing the success of 3G cellular services, it is clear there is a natural evolutionary demand from end-users, both business and consumer, to jump onto the 4G data bandwagon. However, there are still some teething issues that will need to be worked through.

Some operators in Western Europe have stated that while customers do recognize 4G offers higher speeds, they are not necessarily signing up in droves, as many of them are not prepared to pay the premium for 4G handsets and 4G tariffs. “High definition,” from video streaming to richer, more interactive/immersive social networking and gaming experiences, should coax 3G customers to migrate to 4G. Furthermore, mobile device vendors are experiencing intense competitive pressure, which is expected to bring down LTE handset prices, estimated at 10 to 20 percent over the next two years.

“As evidenced by the Australian iPad 3 promotion fiasco, when iPad 3s were being promoted as being ‘LTE-ready,’ even though the modem is unable to access the Australian LTE spectrum band, the number of LTE spectrum bands will hamper initial pricing and product roll-out,” comments Philip Solis, research director, mobile devices. “Nevertheless, in addition to 61 million 4G handsets being shipped in 2012, we estimate 26 million 4G non-handset products will be shipped. In the short-term, most of that will reflect customers purchasing USB dongles for legacy laptops and netbooks, followed by customer premise equipment, or home modem, purchases.”

The deal calls for T-Mobile USA's partner Cool Inlet to exchange 1.7/2.1 GHz spectrum licenses with Leap partner Savary Island Wireless.

T-Mobile USA and Leap Wireless looked to shore up some spectrum shortages in their respective networks, announcing the exchange of licenses covering a handful of markets. The deals were technically made between the operators as well as affiliates of the respective carriers that are fiscally backed by the operators.

The deal calls for T-Mobile USA’s partner Cool Inlet to exchange 1.7/2.1 GHz spectrum licenses with Leap partner Savary Island Wireless. T-Mobile USA will receive licenses covering portions of Alabama, Illinois, Missouri, Minnesota and Wisconsin, while Leap will receive 10 megahertz of wireless spectrum covering Houston, Galveston and Bryan-College Station, Texas; and Phoenix. The deal also includes “intra-market exchanges” between the operators in Philadelphia; Wilmington, Del.; Atlantic City, N.J.; and various markets in Texas and New Mexico. Leap CEO Doug Hutcheson noted the “intra-market exchanges” would “allow us to re-align spectrum in key markets into contiguous channels thereby optimizing our delivery of wireless services.”

Leap noted the transactions help bolster its spectrum holdings for planned LTE deployments, which the carrier recently begun rolling out in Tucson, Ariz. The carrier announced late last year a deal with Verizon Wireless to acquire a 12 megahertz patch of spectrum in the 700 MHz band covering Chicago from its larger rival for $204 million and in turn sell various 1.9 GHz and 1.7/2.1 GHz spectrum licenses to Verizon Wireless for $188 million.

Leap last month signed a a five-year wholesale deal with Clearwire that will provide Leap and its Cricket brand with LTE coverage for customers when they are outside of the company’s native markets. The deal will take advantage of Clearwire’s plans to rollout TD-LTE using its 2.5 GHz spectrum assets. Leap would need to procure devices capable of handling that spectrum band and technology as well as its legacy CDMA network using its 1.7/2.1 GHz and 1.9 GHz spectrum and its LTE network using 700 MHz and 1.7/2.1 GHz spectrum. The Clearwire deal followed the collapse of its one-time deal with LightSquared that has hit the skids due to LightSquared not being able to garner control of its 1.6 GHz spectrum holdings due to interference concerns with some ground-based GPS systems.

For T-Mobile USA, the deal strengthens its network plans that are expected to include a host of spectrum re-farming initiatives designed to free up spectrum to begin the roll out of LTE services. T-Mobile USA announced in late February it plans to install new equipment at 37,000 cell sites and re-farm spectrum in the 1.9 GHz band currently used for its GSM-based services to launch HSPA+ services, which would then allow for the re-farming of its 1.7/2.1 GHz spectrum currently used for HSPA+ services to bolster the spectrum gleaned from the merger break up to launch LTE in the 1.7/2.1 GHz band.

Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced the next generation of their multicore system on a chip (SOC) architecture, Keystone II, at the Mobile World Congress this week. The company also announced the first device that employs the new architecture, the TCI6636 base station on a chip. Tom Flanagan, Director of Technical Strategy for Wireless Base Station Infrastructure at TI, says that in the Keystone II, TI has upgraded the underlying silicon technology from 40nm to 28nm. The company had developed twelve 40nm Keystone chips in just 18 months, he said, each with ~1B transistors. With the new process node, TI has increased transistor density to be able to integrate 2-3B transistors.
