Safety and Security

A couple things that are imperative in society and in just plain life – safety and security – are just as important in the embedded computing realm. From avionics to automobiles to spacecraft to the manufacturing plant, we all like to know we're safe from physical harm caused by mechanical equipment failures. In the avionics realm, electronics safety criticality is ensured by the FAA's safety certification standards called DO-178B and DO-254, for example. In the outside plant or central office, NEBS compliance is likewise vital. However, in the security-critical world, military Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) and net-centric systems used by DoD Command and Control (C2) must be hack-proof to protect our soldiers' lives – and our national security. Multiple Independent Levels of Security (MILS) and virtualization-scheme partitioning can be used to help prevent security infractions and work by invoking a separate partition for each application, thus separating applications with varying classification levels and providing users access only to the applications for which they are authorized. And lastly, though perhaps not necessary for all secure applications, Common Criteria certification additionally means the application has gone through rigorous security testing.

BOSTON, May 21, 2012 — Rostelecom, Russia’s largest telecom operator, which has recently begun expanding operations to include a vast range of communications services, exploring new technologies, platforms, tele-payment systems and joint media projects, is also taking on daunting new-age projects including the placement of live streaming feeds at Russian polling stations as well as working quickly to expand fiber-optic networks to the Sochi region, where the 2014 Winter Olympic Games are to take place.

Rostelecom, together with official wire information partner sponsor, ITAR-TASS, will be officiating, for a select group of US and UK private high net-worth investors, incubators, VCs, and banks, a series of lectures on Russian telecoms including its own new media project TASS-TELECOM (www.tasstelecom.ru), dedicated to report on all subjects related to telecoms in Russia, including cloud technologies, cellular networks, retail technologies, mass media and telecom cooperation, Internet expansion, licensing in the telecoms industry, transport and telecom, new gadgets, security, teleradio, and innovations in the telecom industry. The company will also present projects for direct investment from telecoms across Russia, including those owned by parent company Svyazinvest, which include cell network Skylink, the Russian state postal service, Southern telecoms, UTK, Giprosvyaz and a vast array of others.

Speakers at the conference provided by Rostelecom and ITAR-TASS will include Alexei Yeromin, Editor in Chief of TASS-Telecom, Chief Correspondent Kseniya Ivanova, Stanislav Borodin, Deputy General Director of Southern Telecoms, several top executives of Rostelecom itself, lead by Alexander Provotorov, Chairman of the Management Board, President, and member of the corporate governance and strategy committees. EuraMedia also expects members of the Ministry of Communications, a close ally of ITAR-TASS and Rostelecom, to be on hand.

David Reynolds, Media and Telecom equity analyst for the prestigious Jefferies Group which manages the assets of key high net-worth US investors, who is also speaking at the conference as well as hosting investors, reacted to this announcement with great enthusiasm, stating, “Russia is the fastest growing and most exciting digital market in Europe.”

Many top investment analysts reiterated his enthusiasm, including VTB, Russia’s largest private bank, where funds analyst Allen Polka said, “The SE on these businesses is like 5 or 6. They are tremendously undervalued. I think that Americans, especially, buy into the hype and are scared of Russia. It’s like they are in this constant Cold War state. That’s a major reason for this absurd devaluation in a market that has everything and is destined to grow tremendously, as it really has only just gotten started. Still, there is lack of trust. Russian financial institutions, like VTB, have to and thus do much more than Western ones to show they are compliant.”

Steve Wozniak, a generally respected tech icon, said, “I am very excited to participate the EuraMedia Summit. Considering the current pace of technological advancement, an exchange of ideas between the US and Russia is critical.” He advised that “Innovation is a product of collaboration,” a statement which applies not only to the tech investment forum but the conference as a whole.

On behalf of ITAR-TASS and tasstelecom, Yeromin, who is generally regarded as an industry leader and visionary, commented that he “is proud to be part of such a prestigious and internationally well-regarded forum that will allow his agency to showcase both exciting new media projects and the newest cellular and combined new media-cellular technologies, ripe for foreign investment.” On behalf of EuraMedia, Director Matthew Goldstein said, “I am exhilarated by the fact that such a iconic organizations as ITAR-TASS, Svyazinvest, and Rostelecom have decided to venture into the world of new media and am honored that they have chosen our forum as a platform for showcasing and garnering press and investment support in these forums.”

Seamless interface allows both analog and digital engineers to solve complex analog/mixed-signal verification problems

MONROVIA, California – May 18, 2012 –Tanner EDA, the catalyst for innovation in the design, layout and verification of analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits (ICs), and Aldec, Inc., an industry leader in mixed VHDL, Verilog and SystemVerilog simulation, have collaborated to deliver an integrated co-simulation solution for analog and mixed-signal (A/MS) design. Tanner EDA’s new HiPer Simulation A/MS offers their T-Spice analog design capture and simulation tool together with Aldec’s Riviera-PRO™ mixed language digital simulator. The solution allows both analog and digital designers to seamlessly resolve A/MS verification problems from one cohesive, integrated platform.

Creating and verifying A/MS integrated circuits is a challenge. Spice-based simulation provides the accuracy needed for the analog design, but is too slow to handle the digital part. Event-driven digital simulation provides the necessary speed to simulate the digital portions, but fails when dealing with the analog parts. As A/MS designs grow in complexity and business pressures force design teams to shorten time to market and reduce re-spins, a new solution for mixed analog and digital co-simulation, with a robust feature set and an affordable price, is needed.

HiPer Simulation A/MS helps to eliminate co-simulation complexities by automatically recognizing the analog and digital portions of a design and enabling designers to easily verify interfaces between analog and digital blocks. The integrated solution provides accurate, high-performance co-simulation that allows designers to verify the most complex A/MS designs with ease and confidence, and within budget.

“Tanner EDA’s focus on the price-performance ratio extends to bringing innovations to our customers from well-regarded partners with a similar concern for total cost of ownership,” said Greg Lebsack, president of Tanner EDA. “HiPer Simulation A/MS — based on mature, industry proven products — provides customers with a highly productive and practical A/MS tool suite that bridges the cross-over points between analog and digital design.”

“The synergies we have with Tanner EDA span both technology and business,” said Dr. Stanley Hyduke, president and CEO for Aldec. “Both companies have delivered top-notch products and relentless customer service for the last 20 plus years and this collaborative A/MS solution will prove again why both Aldec and Tanner EDA continue to see growth and innovation in our respective areas of expertise.”

Availability

HiPer Simulation A/MS is available on both Windows and Linux. The new product includes Tanner EDA’s design entry and simulation tool suite for analog design (S-Edit for schematic capture, T-Spice for circuit simulation (with Verilog-A modeling), and W-Edit for waveform probing) and Riviera-PRO (TE) – the Tanner Edition of mixed VHDL and Verilog simulation from Aldec. For additional detail, click here to replay a joint Tanner EDA-Aldec webinar entitled “Bridging Analog and Digital Verification.”

Visit us at DAC 2012

Both companies will be demonstrating the integrated product in their respective booths at DAC 2012 – Tanner EDA in Booth #1126 and Aldec in Booth #2126. (Register online for a private technical demonstration at the Tanner EDA booth.)

Hybridization has eliminated the market for the integrated graphics chipset, but the GPU market is expected to continue thriving at estimated revenue CAGR of 4.1 percent from 2011 through 2016.

Austin, TX – May 17, 2012 – According to a new report by IMS Research, recently acquired by IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS), half of the $111 billion processor market was generated by hybrid processors that included two or more different types of processor cores.

Most notable of these is the 2010 introduction of the combined central processing unit (CPU) and graphics processing unit (GPU) by both Intel and AMD. This hybridization has eliminated the market for the integrated graphics chipset, but the GPU market is expected to continue thriving at estimated revenue CAGR of 4.1 percent from 2011 through 2016.

This hybridization appears to be a critical step in upping the competitive edge in computers but is also a step for these vendors into smartphones, tablets and other high performance embedded devices. Hybrid applications processor growth in smartphones and tablets are predicted with upwards of a 10 percent and 14 percent CAGR from 2011 to 2016 respectively.

“Through the last decade the mobile and media consumption device markets have been pivotal for this hybridization trend; Apple, Broadcom, Marvell, MediaTek, NVidia, Qualcomm, Samsung, St Ericsson, Texas Instruments and many other processor vendors have been offering heterogeneous application-specific processors with a microprocessor core integrating a GPU to add value within extremely confined parameters of space, power and cost,” says Tom Hackenberg, semiconductors research manager and author of the Comprehensive Processor Report.

Now that smartphone sales exceed computers, and tablets explode onto the market, these hybridized application specific mobile processors represent the next largest class of processor by revenue.

Hackenberg continues: “With double digit revenue growth in these markets, it’s not surprising to see major processor vendors such as AMD and Intel adopting this strategy to compete for computer market share and expending increasing research and development on embedded solutions. This hybridization is getting even more competitive with an Intel Atom-based smartphone on the market this month demonstrating that Intel is serious about entering the mobile device market by combining an x86 microprocessor, graphics licensed from NVidia and configurable security logic as a hybrid processor triple play to capture share.”

As economic and physical barriers to shrinking geometries raise concerns of the imminent demise of Moore’s Law, semiconductor providers are turning to hybrid processors as just one of many complementary technologies for increasing system level performance and adding processor value. IMS Research has identified no less than 20 processor vendors that now provide dozens of heterogeneous processing solutions on a single chip.

Some of these converging processors have been evolving over time such as the digital signal controller, a convergence of DSPs and MCUs with the real-time processing performance of a DSP and an expanded instruction set for controller applications. In configurable processors, historically those found in FPGAs, processor vendors such as Xilinx, Altera, Microsemi and Cypress Semiconductor are actively targeting SoC ecosystems with an embedded processor core identical to and applications processor or microcontroller but enhanced with configurable logic.

“This trend is growing and spreading. Other processor vendors are now including application specific configurable logic,” Hackenberg adds. “Intel’s Z2460 mobile processor includes a configurable security engine; Analog Devices’ BF60x DSP targets the anticipated high-growth market of embedded vision with a signal processing SoC that includes configurable logic specifically accelerating vision applications acceleration.”

Computers and media consumption devices dominate revenues in the processor market easily allowing hybrid processors to capture over half the revenues in 2011, but the trend does not stop there. “If processor suppliers are going to continue meeting performance expectations set by Moore’s Law, clearly this is a necessary trend. Future processors may be less marketable by their top-end frequency and more by their application specific cores,” says Hackenberg.

The company claims that its T40 platform addresses operators' need for efficient network elements that decrease delivery costs and improve performance.

Radisys Corporation, a provider of embedded wireless infrastructure solutions expanded its Radisys T-Series family of ATCA solutions with the introduction of the T40, an ATCA-based 40G platform.

The company claims that its T40 platform addresses operators’ need for efficient network elements that decrease delivery costs and improve performance.

Built according to Network Equipment Building System (NEBS) specifications, the T40 platform is a telecom-grade system that provides high-performance solution for the deployment.

Radisys’ T40 platform with high-density input/output (I/O) and throughput delivers the necessary connectivity critical for keeping up with increasing access speeds and is customizable to support specialized applications for any telecommunications environment, including deep packet inspection (DPI), security and Evolved Packet Core (EPC) functions.

“C2Tech selected the Radisys T40 platform for future product lines due to its ability to double the performance of C2Tech’s DPI deployments for traffic monitoring and policy enforcement functions,” said Dr. Ismail Uzun, director of software engineering, C2Tech – a solution provider in information technologies.

The company said that the T40 addresses operators’ struggle to increase service profitability by delivering a 50 percent cost-per-bit reduction over 10G systems.

Furthermore, the platform provides TEMs with a new R&D model in a form of an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) model that allows them to focus solely on building their application.

“As the number one supplier of global telecom platforms and ATCA solutions with 175 customer wins and counting, Radisys has the industry-leading expertise necessary to address the inherent risk TEMs assume when investing R&D resources in the hardware and software development and integration environment,” said Keate Despain, vice president and general manager, platforms, Radisys.

Newly Announced GoldKey USB Security Token with Encrypted Flash is “Editors’ Choice” for USB Security Products

Independence, MO – May 16, 2012 – GoldKey Security Corporation announced that it has received PC Magazine’s highest editorial honor, the Editors’ Choice Award and a perfect Five-Star Rating. In the review, the editorial staff preferred GoldKey with Flash over all other USB security products. GoldKey with Flash is currently the only Flash Drive rated “Five Stars” by PC Magazine.

“The minuscule GoldKey Lite Token can lock and unlock a Windows account, encrypt files and folders, provide entry to websites that support it, and more,” said Neil Rubenking, Lead Analyst for Security at PC Magazine, in the review. “You can now get it with 8GB to 64GB of hardware-encrypted onboard storage.”

GoldKey with Flash is one of the smallest secure flash drives on the market, measuring just 12mm x 30mm x 4mm. It is also one of the most durable. The outer casing is fashioned out of stainless steel and then hardened with the same coating used on drill bits to keep them sharp. It is filled with an industrial-grade epoxy, making the internal circuitry water-resistant. Online videos show GoldKeys being submerged in water and run over by a car without harm.

In addition to the rugged form factor, PC Magazine favored the ease of use with advanced features. “You can configure the administration tool to lock Windows when the GoldKey is removed,” stated the review. “Pull it out, Windows locks up. Put it back, you can log in. Simple!”

GoldKey USB Security Tokens are used by governments and enterprises worldwide and have even been vetted by the FBI to provide Advanced Authentication as part of the CJIS Security Policy compliance strategy for Police Departments.

The GoldKey Lite version, also known as a Pre-Registered GoldKey, comes pre-registered to a GoldKey Master, allowing users to reset a lost password by answering a series of security questions through the online GoldKey ID dashboard. Features such as this prompted PC Magazine to list the product’s cons as “None.”

“With the addition of encrypted onboard storage the GoldKey Lite Token with Built-In Flash becomes a truly excellent hardware security tool,” concluded Rubenking in the review. ”It remains our Editors’ Choice for hardware-based security.”

GoldKey with Flash is available now in 8, 16, 32, and 64 Gigabyte sizes and supports both Windows 7 and Mac OS X Lion operating systems.
