VPX
As a VME progeny standard, VITA/VSO's VPX (VITA 46) form factor provides much higher bandwidth than VME could ever deliver, among other plusses. But there was one issue with VPX: system-level incompatibilities among multiple vendors. Thus VPX's sister standard, OpenVPX (VITA 65) ... Morewas developed, defining modules, slots, and backplane profiles to ensure system-level interoperability. Meanwhile, the VPX/OpenVPX ecosystem continues to grow with additional burgeoning VITA standards such as VITA 62 (Power Supply Modules for VPX/OpenVPX) and VITA 66 (Optical Interconnect on VPX), with more standards sure to arise.

Stacked up: Standardizing mezzanine modules
Last month — Jerry Gipper, Editorial Director, OpenSystems MediaMezzanine modules are an important design element to many board form factors. They grew out of a necessity to gain more board real estate or to incorporate modular flexibility to the original form factor. In the early days, few, if any, standards for mezzanines existed. However, over time, standards emerged to make it easier to incorporate mezzanines into designs.

2 months ago — Staff, Acromag, Inc.VITA 46, 48, and 65: The Next Generation VME system replacement. VITA 46 is the VPX base electrical and mechanical specification. VITA 48 is the VPX REDI cooling spec. VITA 65 is Open VPX. Open VPX was the industry’s attempt to bring order to chaos. Open VPX methodically defines a system of profiles that would fully explain the interactions between the backplane and plug-in modules. The profiles are the physical mapping of resources in the system. This information can then be used to determine compatibility.
